The events take place in Wasit, Iraq, during the reign of Caliph al-Ma'mun, where ibn Sinan's ambitions surface on the land of the widow Umm Salem, which is a small estate. Because Umm Salem refuses to sell the estate to ibn Sinan, his anger boils over, and he takes advantage of his position as the guarantor of the property of Al-Abbas, the son of Caliph al-Ma'mun, and the collector of the tax.
