It follows the rise of Muhammad Ali Pasha to power and his relationship with Omar Makram, then his betrayal of him after he helped him reach power. The play reflects the struggle between power and conscience, and shows how the ruler turns into a prisoner inside his castle when he denies those who helped him and breaks his promises to the people.
