As a famine hits Kuwait City in 1930, Umm Munira (Munira's mother) is forced to sell cooking pots and home furniture in order to feed her children.
Smallpox spreads in the city, and the school's students fall one by one. Abu Badr (Badr's father) works in the local council to fix the situation, and Munira's sister, Lulwa, is infected with smallpox.
Umm Badr advises Munira not to get close to her sister so that the disease does not spread to her. Umm Munira expels her daughter from the house out of fear for her, so the latter is forced to stay with the female religion teacher.
Lulwa dies of smallpox, and many families lay their children to rest. Abu Munira returns from travel and is shocked by the death of his daughter.
