Leila is upset with her father, Abdel Tawab, who rejects her university education and forces her mother and sister to work in a small shop. Because he owes money to Ibrahim and works with him in a shady business, her father accepts his marriage proposal to his daughter. Despite her father's stance, Leila refuses to marry and attends university, beginning a new period of family struggle.
