Shakhloul inherits a modest business from his father in the countryside. He then expands his trade, eventually monopolizing major commodities. His success leads him to sit with senior state officials. He seeks to marry Aziza, the mayor's beautiful daughter, despite her objection, as she is engaged to the village doctor in her dreams.
