The story takes place in 1815, in the era King Joachim Murat wants to unite Italy into one kingdom, with Naples as its capital, and the popular enthusiasm in support of that idea. As the noble Eugenio returns to Naples, after his participation in the Napoleonic Wars, he suffers great physical and psychological pains as a result of the war.
