A university professor is fed up with his life, his work, and the bourgeois world in which he lives, especially his wife. He decides to disappear from this world by descending to the lowest social level and living there. He does, however, live in a poor working-class neighborhood, in a room owned by a coffee shop owner. A love story develops between him and the owner's young daughter.
