A depiction of the creation of the Israeli state from 1948 to the present, through the story of Suleiman's own family in Nazareth and their daily struggle and how they chose to remain in their homeland in the face of Israeli aggression.
This picture is a semi-biographical black comedy by Palestinian (filmmaker) Elia Suleiman. The title has received much praise and won the Jury Grand Prize at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards as well as the Critics Prize from the Argentinean Film Critics Association. Through the four episodes of the production, Suleiman recounts his family’s history throughout the period of the Palestinian Diaspora beginning in 1948 when his father was a resistance fighter. Suleiman also recalls some of his own memories and discusses the life of Palestinians who chose to remain in their country after the founding of Israel and thus came to be known as “Israeli-Arabs”.
