The girl has lived with her English mother since her father abandoned her at three and returned to Egypt. She didn't visit Egypt then. After turning twenty, her father urges her to return to inherit his money, but she feels alienated from the people, country, and father she has never known. The father dies and leaves a conditional will that she marry an Egyptian.
