A European explorer writes to his friend Hamdi Bey that there are mummy tombs on the outskirts of Alexandria that have not yet been discovered. As Hamdi invites him to come, along with his wife and friends, one of Hamdi's friends sees that there are 13 guests, a number that Europeans are pessimistic about, so he asks one of the house servants to play the role of the Sultan of an imaginary country.
