Set at the beginning of the US invasion of Iraq, Dounia Abu Laila, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Baghdad, joins a resistance against this invasion. She is arrested and placed in prison. The US officer, John Walton, is not convinced of the feasibility of war and is transferred to the same prison in order to undertake the investigation with Dounia, and they quickly bond intellectually.
