The French General de Jarjayes wanted a boy to carry the family name, but he had a girl. He decided to name her Oscar and was keen to raise her as a boy, so he taught her the arts of combat, fencing, and horsemanship, so that at the age of fourteen she became commander of the Royal Guard charged with protecting Marie Antoinette.
