Medhat Bey Al-Orfally marries the peasant Khadija Al-Sab'a to serve his mother and get him a baby. Khadija soon gives birth to a baby girl she calls Zeinab.

Medhat dies and entrusts Saleh with looking after Zeinab who grows up to become a fine schoolgirl. Madkour Pasha gives Abdel Hady a sum of money dedicated to publishing a new newspaper and heading it; he then meets with Hassan.

Saleh and Hassan start working for Abdel Hady. Zeinab's grandmother passes away and leaves her a special box. Abdel Hady's newspaper goes through difficulty and he tries to save his business by all means.

At Madkour's orders, Youssef is appointed in the newspaper. Zeinab visits the house of her friend Elham's mother, Sawsan. Ramadan and Khadija intend to forcibly wed Zeinab to Nour Al-Din. Madkour is arrested in the wake of the Egyptian Revolution of 1952

Abdel Hady learns that the General Intelligence Directorate is keeping watch on his newspaper and Hassan is assigned to write a report on him. Zeinab grows despondent as her marriage is decided to take place on the following day.

After the wedding, Zeinab and Nour Al-Din travel to Paris to work at the embassy, but they soon return to Egypt when Nour Al-Din is accused of robbery. Ramadan passes away. It turns out that Nour Al-Din hid the money at Khadija's house. Diab starts working at the newspaper at superior orders.

A sorrowful Zeinab collapses following Sawsan's death. Zeinab's accusing Nour Al-Din of robbery is met with disbelief. At Elham's house, Zeinab meets Hassan and slaps him for harassing her.

Saleh threatens Hassan to get him to stay away from Zeinab. Zeinab quarrels with Nour Al-Din's friends and soon meets Abdel Hady who instantly develops feelings for her. Diab leaves work at the newspaper.

News spread about Zeinab and Abdel Hady going out together. Mokhtar is assigned to get any information about Abdel Hady. A decision to nationalize the newspaper is issued and Diab becomes the CEO.

Zeinab and Abdel Hady resume their meetings and Nour Al-Din grows impatient with his wife's negligence of him. Zeinab communicates to Elham her desire to have a divorce to be with Abdel Hady.

Zeinab is shocked when Abdel Hady refuses to marry her. Diab assigns Youssef a new task behind Abdel Hady's back and tells him about Abdel Hady's relationship with Zeinab.

Zeinab and Khadija quarrel over the former's relationship with Nour Al-Din. Hassan scandalizes Abdel Hady, and Abdel Hady assures Youssef that nothing happened between him and Zeinab. Diab appoints Ali Hammam an editor.

Contretemps arises in the newspaper. Abdel Hady tells Youssef he loves Zeinab, but he cherishes his freedom that he wouldn't risk losing it for marrying her. Zeinab goes out for a walk with Abdel Hady and Youssef.

When Diab decides to dismiss Abdel Hady, higher authorities intervene and urge him to take back his decision. Khadija quarrels with Nour Al-Din over his mistreatment of her. Zeinab gets closer to Abdel Hady.

Zeinab's husband demands she mediate with Abdel Hady to re-employ him if he is to divorce her. Hassan fills Abdel Hady's head with suspicions about Zeinab's fidelity and he confronts her.

Zeinab visits the ill Elham and she learns that she is an ex belly dancer. Things get tense between Youssef and Abdel Hady as Hassan stirs discord between them.

Hassan takes Youssef to Elham's house where they see Diab's brother. Abdel Hady falls ill and So'aad looks after him. Zeinab quarrels with her mother as she applies for a job as a flight attendant. Youssef and Diab have disagreements.

Zeinab gets close to Youssef. Abdel Hady resumes work despite his illness. Zeinab's attempts to land a job are futile and she learns that Khadija has squandered her father's money. Nour Al-Din urges Zeinab to use her relationship with Abdel Hady to get him a job.

Abdel Hady agrees to help Nour Al-Din, but Zeinab refuses to marry him after her divorce. Abdel Hady is suspicious about Zeinab's relationship with Youssef. Hassan informs Diab about Abdel Hady's scheme against him.

When Khadija throws Zeinab out, she stays at Youssef's sister's house. Now that Nour Al-Din's hope to travel is thwarted, he refuses to divorce Zeinab.

Khadija urges Nour Al-Din to take back Zeinab if he wants his money back. Elham advises Zeinab to meet Nour Al-Din and solve their problems before he resorts to the law. Youssef stands by Zeinab and refuses to let her return to Nour Al-Din.

Hassan publishes the news of Youssef running away with Zeinab. Saleh visits Youssef's house to learn if he genuinely intends to marry Zeinab. Zeinab returns home and threatens to report Nour Al-Din and Khadija to the police if they ever stand in the way of her freedom.

Abdel Hady instigates Nour Al-Din against Zeinab to put an end to her relationship with Youssef. Youssef, meanwhile, cannot move on and forget Zeinab. Diab tries to get Elham to persuade Zeinab to leave Youssef.

Diab learns that Elham is his ex-wife. Nour Al-Din begs Diab to keep Youssef away from Zeinab and Youssef submits his resignation. Nour Al-Din goes to Saleh's house to divorce Zeinab and get his money back.

Diab visits Elham who tells him that Sawsan is their daughter and asks him to have mercy on Zeinab. Nour Al-Din divorces Zeinab and she has to wait for the 'iddah (waiting period) to end before she marries Youssef. Diab rejects Youssef's resignation.

Despite Hassan and Abdel Hady's attempts to ruin their marriage, Youssef and Zeinab get married. Abdel Hady considers publishing an article exposing Zeinab's previous relationship with Abdel Hady. Youssef and Zeinab return from abroad as he resumes work.

Zeinab and Youssef quarrel and she leaves the house and returns to her mother's. Khadija calls Nour Al-Din to inform him of the quarrel which Abdel Hady also learns about and rejoices at.

Zeinab returns home and apologizes to Youssef and they soon learn she is pregnant. Youssef invites Hassan and Abdel Hady over for dinner. Abdel Hady marries So'aad and news of their marriage spread vastly.

When he falls ill, Diab calls Elham to apologize for leaving her in the past. Youssef and Zeinab's relationship goes through ups and downs. Diab is dismissed from work and he decides to travel to France.

Youssef and Zeinab have a divorce, and when they return together, the news of her abortion strikes both of them. Youssef quarrels with Hassan and Abdel Hady for making jokes about the matter, and Abdel Hady decides to forget about Zeinab.

The Six-Day War breaks out in Egypt. Things between Youssef and Zeinab get better and she miraculously survives a car accident. Zeinab decides to resume her studies. Saleh passes away, and on his deathbed, he asks Youssef to take good care of Zeinab.
