By tying thousands of balloons to the roof of his house, elderly Carl intends to make his dream of seeing South America's prairies come true. When he takes off, he realizes that he is not alone on his trip, for little Russel unintentionally came along for the ride.

This title is an animated comedy-adventure production. It is director Pete Docter’s second production and it features the voices of Christopher Plummer, Edward Asner, Jordan Nagai and Bob Peterson. Carl Fredricksen (Edward Asner) is a young boy who looks up to airship pioneer and explorer Charles F. Muntz (Christopher Plummer). After Muntz presents a skeleton of a giant ostrich type bird that he has discovered on a trip to South America, he is accused of having fabricated it. Thus Muntz leaves again to South America, vowing to return with a live specimen to prove his claim. Carl gets to know a tomboy girl named Ellie who shares many of his interests. The pair eventually fall in love, get married and grow old together. However, shortly before embarking on a trip they had been looking forward to their whole lives, Ellie becomes ill and dies shortly afterwards. Carl, now a lonely senior citizen, decides to go on the trip anyway. He transforms his house into a makeshift airship and on his long-awaited trip to South America he is joined by a young wilderness explorer named Russell (Jordan Nagai). Although Carl considers him something of a nuisance at first, the two eventually share many adventures and develop a strong bond.
