During World War II, three Jewish brothers flee to the Belarussian forests where they struggle to survive while helping other Jews to defend themselves from the Nazi war machine.
This production is a World War II film that was written, produced and directed by Edward Zwick. The film stars Daniel Craig and tells the story of the Bielski partisans, a group of Jewish partisans who saved a large number of Jews in Belarus from Nazi extermination. In August 1939 the Bielski brothers Tuvia (Daniel Craig) and Zus (Live Schreiber) and Asael (Jamie Bell) seek refuge in a forest after local authorities begin an extermination program of local Jews under the orders of the German occupation forest. Whilst seeking refuge in the forest, the brothers encounter other Jews that are hiding from the local authorities. Under the leadership of the Bielski brothers, the group is organized into a fighting force that ambushes German forces and their collaborators. They also raid local farms for supplies. An internal conflict between the brothers leads to the fracturing of the group. Nonetheless, the band reforms towards the end of the film and survives German counterattacks by retreating deep into the forest.
