During the time of the Roman empire, Emperor Marcus Aurelius decides that his heir will be General Maximus. However, his son, Commodus, murders him before he has a chance to act on his decision, and he becomes the Emperor after his father. Commodus then decides that Maximus must be killed, who in a turn of events, becomes a gladiator and a hero in people's eyes.
