The series revolves around the brilliant lawyer Patty Hewes, who tries to protect her colleague Ellen Parsons, who works with her at a law firm in New York City. However, the complex relationship between Patty and Ellen becomes clear over time.
In season 2, Ellen works with the FBI to catch Patty, while also seeking revenge on Arthur Frobisher for his apparent role in her fiancé's death.

One year after the events of season 2, Louis Tobin, the patriarch of the wealthy Tobin family, confesses to masterminding the largest Ponzi scheme in the history of Wall Street. The US government tasks Patty Hewes and Tom Shayes to find Tobin's hidden money.
In season 4, three years have passed since Patty and Ellen last worked together. Ellen reconnects with her high school friend, Chris Sanchez, who has recently returned from his job at a famous contractor in the Middle East.
In season 5, Patty confronts Ellen in two separate cases, the first involving the wrongful death lawsuit against Channing McClaren, and the second, Ellen's subpoena to testify against Patty in the custody battle for Patty's son, Michael.
