During the British occupation of Egypt, the widowed officer Shukri is father of two daughters, Samira and Doria, and his son who died in one of the demonstrations. Shukri, who lives on Aziz Street, was pensioned off for assaulting an English officer and refusing to shoot the demonstrators.
As Shukri is trying to find a job, he exchanges admiring glances with his neighbor Souad. The people of Aziz Street are still suffering from the hustle of the house parties of Daoud and his wife, Adela. Abdulaziz, a resident of Aziz Street, exchanges admiring looks with Samira, who is ignorant that he doesn't love her.
As Abdel Latif, Abdulaziz's brother takes the path of politics, Souad's children are concerned about Shukri's presence in her house, while Souad works in sewing to support her children.
Souad tries to get close to Adela's wealthy friends to make clothes for them. Insaf, the maid, tries to get close to Daoud, and she still hates Adela. Abdel Latif tries to get closer to Mimi, ignoring Amin, her husband.
Saad, Daoud's son, declares his love for Doria, and Souad reprimands her sister for meeting Saad. As Mimi borrows clothes from Souad's sewing workshop to audition for acting, Doria tells Souad the truth about her feelings towards Saad. Shukri receives a summons.
As Shukri is surprised by the ministry's request to return him to service, the people of the street participate in his party to celebrate the news. Mimi is rehearsing the new script. Shukri sees some of his neighbors looking at him as if he gave up on his principles.
Shukri returns to the Ministry of Defense, and Saad is expelled from the school for assaulting his English-born teacher. The people of the street doubt the truth of Souad's feelings toward Shukri.
Saad and Shawky discover that their books got stolen by their classmate Shawkat. The students and teachers sympathize with the cause of Saad after he got permanently expelled. Shwikar, Adela's friend, helps Souad to tailor cloth to the pasha's wife and daughter.
Saad beats an English soldier to defend his neighbor, Rajaa, and escapes before his arrest. The principal agrees with the English teacher on Saad's return and the dissolution of the rhetoric group. Amin's colleague asks him to steal from the inventory. Shukri and Abdulaziz go to Lady Shwikar's parties.
As Shukri is promoted and asks to marry Souad, he tells his daughter Samira about his intentions. The principal and the English teacher conspire against the students and Saad. Alaa tries to get closer to Souad.
As Samira collapses after her father's request to marry Souad, she tries to distract him from marrying Souad, in agreement with her neighbor Anisa. Amin starts stealing from the inventory of the company he works for.
Anisa informs Alaa of the news of Souad marrying Shukri to put an end to the marriage. Alaa confronts Souad with the idea of marrying Shukri after she refused to marry him, and threatens to deprive her from her children.
Abdel Latif is arrested on charges of joining a communist group, and Shwikar and Souad ask for Brigadier Esmat's help to release him. Shukri is surprised by Esmat's admiration for Souad.
Shukri admonishes Souad because of Esmat. As Abdel Latif returns home, Shukri invites the people of Aziz Street to his house to celebrate the former's return. Souad prepares for the opening of her private atelier, in partnership with Shwikar.
As Souad opens her atelier with Shwikar, Shukri reproaches Shwikar for going with Souad to Esmat, and Souad promises Shukri to quit her job after marrying him.
Amin is recruited to work with the British, and Abdullah informs his neighbor Shukri of the fact that their neighbor Amin is working with the British. Amin receives a threat from the patriots after they learn of his recruitment. Anisa and Mimi are surprised by Shukri's visit to Souad at the Atelier.
Skirmishes occur between Samira and her father about his visit to Souad at the Atelier after Anisa told her. As Shawkat spies on his classmates and informs the principal of their movements, he is arrested by State Security to throw suspicion off him that he's working with them.
Abdullah exposes Amin to Shukri, his neighbor, so Shukri exposes him in front of his wife. Abdulaziz reprimands his brother Shawky after learning of his involvement with the patriots against the British.
The press reports on the news of Souad's success and indicates that there is a relationship between her and an officer in the Ministry of Interior. Shukri gets angry about that, so he quarrels with Souad because of Esmat. Alaa also gets upset about what the press reported about Souad.
As Souad kicks Esmat out of the Atelier after what the newspapers said about them, Shukri separates from Souad. Daoud secretly marries his maid.
Amin steps back from helping the British, and Souad threatens Alaa to stay away from her children, so he files a case to take her kids. Amin resorts to Shukri after the British threatened him, and Shukri's condition worsens by staying up daily in nightclubs.
As Abdullah continues the patriotic operations and kills those who threaten Amin, Shawky discovers Shawkat's betrayal of them by conveying their news to the principal and in turn to the British.
Rajaa is terminally ill, and Souad discovers Shwikar's conspiracy with the press on her because she loves Shukri. The partnership between Souad and Shwikar ends, and Souad returns to work at her home.
Souad agrees with Alaa to dismiss the case after she returns to her home and changes her mind about marrying Shukri, so he informs her that Anisa is the one who informed him. Abdulaziz treats Rajaa at home, and Amin receives a letter about demolishing his house for encroaching on state lands.
Saad discovers that his father is with the maid in a restaurant, so Daoud informs his son of the fact that he is married to her. Shukri notes the presence of strangers in Abdul Hai's house for the meeting.
As Shukri's condition deteriorates, Rajaa still suffers from the disease. Abdel Latif helps Amin in the lawsuit filed against him as a student at the Faculty of Law.
Shukri and Souad's relationship improves after she returns home, and Kamal, an officer in the Ministry of Interior, proposes to marry Samira. Saad declares his love for Doria, and dies as a martyr in one of the demonstrations.
Doria collapses following the news of Saad’s martyrdom. As the number of victims is increasing, Shukri doesn't participate in the dispersal of the demonstrations, according to his principles. As Souad volunteers at Al-Qasr Al-Aini Hospital, Rajaa's condition improves and she tries to join Youssef Wehbe's troupe.
As Daoud's condition worsens after his son's martyrdom, Souad helps Samira in the wedding preparations. Shawky, Abdel Latif, and Abdul Hai cooperate with Abdullah to print the leaflets.
The ministry promises Shukri a promotion, and he goes to a demonstration on Martyr’s Day in solidarity with Saad’s martyrdom. Souad doubts Shukri after the news of his promotion, and Abdullah blows up the house of the High Commissioner.
