Shoe shiner Marcel Marx relocates to Le Havre, leaving his ill-paying trade behind. He also decides to forsake his life-long dream of becoming a writer and settles, instead, for a modest existence split between the bar he works in and his wife Arletty. But Fate suddenly decides otherwise, throwing an African child refugee his way, in addition to striking his wife down with a debilitating disease.
