Beethoven is a big St Bernard dog, who is lavished with love and attention by the family who adopted him. Dr. Varnick, the family veterinarian, however, wants to make use of him as a test subject for his lethal experiments.

When Beethoven, the Newtons' Saint Bernard dog, falls for the Saint Bernard female Missy, they decide to start a family. Missy's owner, Regina, however, intends to get rid of the couple's four puppies, whereupon the Newton kids come to their rescue.
