To support his small family, Salvatore, a young orphan living in Sicily, drops out of school and begins working as a fisherman and farmer. Salvatore's position is quickly discovered by the Social Services, who decide to place him in an orphanage. Only a young, idealistic teacher makes an effort to help Salvatore.
