The story of four Chinese immigrants mothers as they reflect on their lives with their Chinese-American daughters, while struggling to understand their family ties and one another.
The Joy Luck Club consists of four Chinese women (Lindo, Suyuan, Ying-Ying, and An-Mei) who live in San Francisco and gather to play mahjong and tell stories, mostly about growing up in China. Each of them women has a daughter, born and raised in the U.S. While the mothers hoped that emigrating to the U.S. and raising their daughters there would provide opportunities they never had, there remain many obstacles to overcome. The story sheds light on the tension of mother-daughter relationships and the broader clash of Chinese and American cultures.
