Stephen Jameson is a former army officer who, after retiring, works as a guard at San Quentin Prison. When the latter's new girlfriend's brother, Joe, is in prison for a robbery, he tries to separate new prisoners, like Joe, from tough old criminals like Hansen. As Hansen has his own plans, he causes problems by informing his inmate, Joe, about Jameson's feelings towards his sister.
