Set in 1920, Ewa and her sister Magda sail to New York, from their home country Poland. When they arrive on Ellis Island, they discover that Magda is sick and they get separated . Magda is quarantined, and Ewa soon falls prey to Bruno, an attractive but wicked man, who makes her work in prostitution.
