 Hirayama is an aging widower who worked formerly as a captain in the Japanese navy, and currently works as a manager of a factory and lives with his twenty-four year-old daughter Michiko and his son Kazuo in his house. Kazuo is married to Akiko, who compulsively controls the house's finances. When Hirayama meets with his friends in a reunion with their mentor Sakuma, they discover that he has been living with his daughter, who chose celibacy to take care of him. Although Michiko is living happily with her father, Hirayama tries to arrange her marriage out of fear that she would end up like Sakuma's daughter.
