The newspaper editor Dr. Ludwing Schön loves Lulu, a dancer and prostitute. Schigolch, her ex-lover, visits her with Rodrigo Quast, who offers her a part in a variety show. A compromising situation forces Schön to decide to marry Lulu. At the wedding reception, Schön follows Lulu to the bedroom and sees her dancing with Schigolch and Rodrigo. He becomes enraged and demands that Lula kill herself.
