Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney began shooting his documentary about the storied, cancer-beating cyclist Lance Armstrong in 2009, his supposed “comeback year.” When allegations of drug use turned out to be proven true, Gibney made his subject come clean about his lies, which transformed the project into an intimate examination of hero mythology and the power of celebrity in professional sports.
