With her father's dark history dogging her steps, Fisher struggles to fit in the high society circles that she supposedly belongs in. In a desperate attempt to find a place, she hires the well-bred but poor Jimmy to be her escort to a party. However, a theft threatens to foil her attempt to fit in.
Fisher Willow is a disliked 1920s Memphis débutante daughter of a plantation owner with a distaste for narrow-minded people and a penchant for shocking and insulting those around her. She falls in love with Jimmy, the down-and-out son of an alcoholic father and an insane mother who works at a store on her family's plantation. She tries to pass him as an upper class suitor in front of her family but the theft of a diamond jeopardize their relationship.
