Taking place during the Great Depression, the self-sacrificing mother Mildred Pierce finds herself on her own after separating from her husband, as she struggles to find a decent job to support her two daughters.

Veda is humiliated after finding out that her mother works as a waitress. Mildred's pies become a success at the diner, and she decides to turn a house into a restaurant after finalizing her divorce. Mildred begins a relationship with the handsome customer, Monty Beragon.

Following the death of her youngest daughter, Mildred focuses on the opening of her new restaurant. Veda and Monty start to get along, and Mildred is not happy with his extravagant lifestyle.

Four years later in 1937, Mildred and her partner Lucy are looking to open her third restaurant on Laguna Beach. Veda leaves the house after clashing with Mildred, and she becomes a singer.

As Mildred tries to reconnect with Veda, she decides to marry Monty while her business faces financial difficulties. Mildred's world comes crashing down after a shocking discovery.
