After returning from diplomatic duty in 1936, Sir Hallam Holland and his lovely wife, Agnes, move into Eaton Hall, once the Bellamy family home. Rose Buck, a former domestic employee, is asked to look after the estate and hire workers. Depression and unemployment plagued England in the 1930s, and fascism in Italy and Germany enticed some to follow it.
