Mason and Olivia are a divorced couple trying to raise their young son, Mason Jr. The film follows the boy's life for twelve years, from first grade at age 6, till the twelfth grade, examining his relationship with his parents all the way through.

The story begins with Mason, a dreamy school student who faces life's turmoils. His mother, Olivia (Patricia Arquette), is an unmarried, struggling woman devoting her life for him, and decides to take him and his sister Samantha (Lorelei Linklater) to Houston, after the appearance of their father, Mason, (Ethan Hawk). Life revolves for Mason where he tries to deal with the different people in his life.
