Gelsomina lives with her family in an Italian farm where they work in bee keeping. When a TV crew offers them to participate in a competition for farmers, she applies in it in spite of her parents objection.

A father constructs a secluded environment around his family to protect them from the apocalypse; 12-year-old Gelsomina is named its heir, and placed entirely in charge of her three younger sisters. The hidden rules of their existence, however, are tasted by the intervention of the outside world, as a young German boy arrives on a youth rehabilitation program, while their local community takes part in a TV reality contest.
