Inspired by a true story, the film follows the lawyer Sam Leibowitz as he becomes involved in a rape case with racial dimensions. Learning of the death sentence that nine black youths received for supposedly raping two white women, Leibowitz fights to prove the innocence of the Scottsboro Boys.
