High-profile lawyer Annalise Keating picks five of her students to work at her firm. The body of a sorority girl is discovered in a water tank. In a flashforward, Annalise's students argue over how to dispose of a body.

As their new case goes south, Annalise starts to suspect that her husband Sam knew the murdered girl. In a flashforward, Wes makes a phone call to his neighbor and assures that everything will be alright.

Wes steps in when Rebecca is set up to take the fall for Lila's murder. Nate looks into Sam's alibi on the night of Lila's murder. In a flashforward, Michaela discovers that she lost her engagement ring in the woods while disposing of Sam's body.

When Wes causes Rebecca to admit to Lila's murder, he is taken off the case. Wes and Rebecca discover nude photos of Sam Keating on Lila's phone.

Annalise confronts Sam about the photo. Laurel's attempt to help with the case nearly lands her in jail. Rebecca discovers that the man in the photo is Sam Keating. In a flashforward, Annalise's students try to get the murder weapon back in her house.

Annalise and her students prepare to take a case to the Supreme Court to prove the innocence of a death-row inmate. Frank plants Lila's phone in her boyfriend's car. In a flashforward, Annalise questions Bonnie on Sam's whereabouts. Bonnie and Asher hook up.

When Lila's body is exhumed, Annalise is shocked to learn that Lila was pregnant when she died. In a flashforward, Rebecca tries to convince Wes to let her take the fall for Sam's murder.

Bonnie tells Annalise that Sam knew of Lila's pregnancy. Rebecca sneaks into Annalise's house to try and get incriminating evidence on Sam, which eventually leads to his death. In a flashback, Lila goes to Annalise's house on the night of her murder to reveal her affair with Sam.

The circumstances of Sam's murder are revealed. A flashback reveals that Annalise knew about Sam's murder.

Annalise shifts the blame of Lila's murder onto Sam and gets Rebecca acquitted. As Connor and Michaela plan to turn themselves in and pin Sam's murder on Wes, Annalise convinces them not to. Sam's sister, Hannah, arrives in town to investigate Annalise's claims about Sam.

Hannah questions Annalise about Sam's disappearance. Frank destroys Connor's car as a forensic counter-measure. Sam's body is found.

With Annalise under suspicion for Sam's murder, Bonnie confronts Annalise about the actions of the Keating Four. Annalise gets Frank to frame Nate for Sam's murder.

Annalise's traumatic past comes to light when her mother comes to town. Wes starts to suspect that Rebecca is lying to him and that she had something to do with Lila's murder. Michaela confronts Annalise about framing Nate.

Wes and Laurel suspect that Rebecca killed Lila after they learn of their argument on the night of Lila's death. When the Keating Four confronts Rebecca, she threatens to report them for Sam's murder. The Keating Four ties Rebecca up.

A flashback reveals that Sam had Frank have killed Lila after she threatened to reveal their affair. As Rebecca escapes, Frank and Annalise suspect the other of freeing her. It's revealed that Rebecca didn't escape but was killed and hidden beneath the stairs.
