After committing several petty crimes, 15-year-old Snit Mandolin returns to a society that shuns him. After spending two years in a reformatory, he hunkers down on the farm of his eccentric Aunt Matilda. Fearful of society, he becomes friends with another outcast, Johnny Swift, a friendship that leads him back to crime, as Johnny makes liquor and sells it through a local smuggler. The two young men work together, and soon a strong friendship develops between them. Before that, Snit falls in love with a free-spirited girl named Robin, and they go through life not knowing that the police are following them.
