As Brett and Michelle hit a rough patch in their marriage, Brett's struggling actor friend, Alex, moves in with them, as does Michelle's sister, Tina, after her boyfriend breaks up with her.

Tina gives Michelle advice to help her enliven her tedious sex life. She also undertakes helping Alex with his career by training him to make him get in shape.

Alex and Tina go with Brett's to the premiere of the movie he worked on, while Michelle stays behind. Later on, she decides to go out and ends up meeting a single father called David.

Alex accompanies Tina to Houston to get her stuff. Afterwards, Tina's friend Pam starts flirting with Alex, which makes Tina jealous. Meanwhile, Brett and Michelle's attempt to salvage their marriage backfires and they decide to go to a therapist.

After a therapy session, Michelle decides to arrange a fun day and invites friends, while Brett feigns interest. As she encounters trouble with a bunch of hipster kids, David comes to her aid.

Brett crosses paths with the freewheeling Linda while working in the woods, while Michelle agrees to go on a business trip with David. Alex quarrels with Tina as the audition that she got him doesn't go as he expected.

As Michelle hosts a fundraiser for David's charter school, Brett doesn't attend, and, instead, accepts Linda's invitation to a spiritual retreat. Meanwhile, Tina and Alex continue to avoid one another.

After Tina moves out of Brett and Michelle's house, Alex also decides to leave, whereupon he receives great news. As Brett starts enjoying himself while at the beach with the kids, he tries to tell Michelle, who went on a trip to Sacramento with David.
