The unlucky racing car driver, Jim Douglas, sees a Volkswagen car at a car show, and the car owner welcomes the idea of getting rid of it as it is strange and runs according to its own desires. However, Douglas is able to control it and makes several modifications to it to make it suitable for racing. He names it Herbie and wins several races with it.
