During a table-reading, Tarek Ramdan and Durreya Shafeeq are enraged to discover that the play they are reading for actually echoes their personal lives. The play has a revelation that disturbs Tarek and draws him to the past.
Taheyya and Durreyya have a seemingly trivial quarrel, and Abbas finds a way to side with Taheyya. When they start to grow close, Tarek grows irate and quarrels with Abbas.
Abbas’s mother, Haleema El-Kabsh, disapproves of his relationship with Taheyya, claiming that her past stands in their way. Taheyya and Abbas turn over a new leaf when they get married and she gives him a son and gifts him with a typewriter.
With Abbas focused on writing the play, he delivers the manuscript to Sarhan El-Helaly for approval. Meanwhile, Durreya has a different concern. Sarhan approves the play, and calls for rehearsals.
A flashback shows how Tarek and Taheyya met and how their fiery love story ended when Tarek refused to marry her despite his love for her. They split and she marries Abbas a while later. The grief-stricken Tarek is left bereft when she dies before he asks for her forgiveness.
A flashback introduces Taheyya’s family, from her infamous mother to her sisters Aleyya , an aspiring journalist, and Saneyya, a belly dancer. Their personal struggles and disappointments are echoed by the 1967 defeat and Nasser's concession speech.
Sarhan El-Helaly prepares a pro-government play that Tarek doesn’t want to be part of. The theater is shaken by a robbery. Badreyya’s daughters are visited by their estranged father.
When Abdou tries to convince his daughter to give him a part of her earnings, a furious Taheyya kicks him out. Tarek takes Karam to stay with Taheyya and her sisters. Aleyya regrets reporting Tarek to the police and getting him arrested and tortured.
Tarek Ramadan is released, and he takes Abbas back to his family after a month’s absence. Tarek takes up residence with Om Hany who is in love with him, but they soon quarrel over his love for Taheyya.
At Taheyya’s funral, Tarek is overcome with grief that he starts sobbing. He starts to recall his past with his best friend Sarhan, and his relationship with Taheyya.
Tarek survives a suicide attempt. Saddened by what has become of Tarek, Sarhan tries to talk Taheyya into taking him back.
The three sisters experience life-changing moments in their lives: Taheyya gets a role in a play, Saneyya gets pregnant, and Aleyya fakes pregnancy to get Fouad Baoumi to marry her.
During the showing of Abbas’s The Weddings of Quba, Karam and Haleema take a moment to breathe and smoke. An officer comes to investigate the possibility that Taheyya’s murder in the play is based on a real crime. Aleyya shows up with burns on her face.
Haleema El-Kabsh recounts her story of how she came to work at the theatre and how Sarhan was attracted to her. But he abandons her after sleeping with her, and she has to marry Karam, who leaves her when she confesses her past.
The story unfolds through Abbas’s eyes: how fascinated he was by the theatrical world from an early age, and how he used to spy on Sarhan and Dorreyya and steals money from the theatre.
With Saneyya Abdo at El-Helaly’s theater, the place flourishes, which ignites Dorreyya’s jealousy. The whole situation makes Taheyya reflects on her past. An unknown assailant disfigures Saneyya’s face by throwing nitric acid at her.
The sisters’ relationship are on the rocks as Saneyya starts suspecting both her sisters. Aleyya reports that Ashraf Bashandy, her brother-in-law, is trading opium.
Ashraf finds out that Aleyya is the one who turned him on and swears revenge. He traps Badreya and Aleyya in a burning house, killing the former and giving the latter severe burns. Ashraf is sentenced to death.
The cast are now acting the scene where Tarek and Taheyya drift away. Tarek reminisces over their past. Doreyya remembers Taheyya’s last words to her. The cast is shocked to learn about the death of Amm Mahmoud.
Backstage, everyone grieves for Amm Mahmoud, whereas on-stage, Tarek is so agitated that he goes off-script, which angers Abbas who is seated among the audience.
Abbas Karam and Tarek Ramadan get into an altercation in front of the audience. Doreyya tries to leave, but the cops arrive at the theatre.
Tarek’s impassioned off-script speech appeals to the audience that they give him a standing ovation. Karam and Haleema are shocked and distressed by the way their son portrayed them in the play.
Witnessing the peculiar situation at home, Abbas becomes bitter and develops a mild hatred towards his parents. He plans to propose to Taheyya and become a prompter.
Taheyya reminisces over the past and reflects on the days where her mother disapproved of her acting career and wanted her to become a dancer instead.
Karam recalls his first encounter with Haleema, and his relationship with Fotna who made him the prompter that he started off as. Fotna was able to choose him after Sarhan lost half of the theater while gambling.
Aa a disagreement between Fotna and Sarhan erupts, Abbas is indirectly affected by this. A journey into Fotna's past reveals her relation to Durreya.
Fotna plots against her sister and accuses her of robbery. Tarek and Sarhan plan to have Fotna Killed. Durreyya manages to escape, and goes to Karam's place.
Karam, Tarek, Sarhan, and Durreyya plot to drive Fotna insane using the fact that she doesn't know that Durreyya is still alive. Fotna is committed to a mental institution.
The Weddings of Al-Quba is a great success, and all the cast except for Abbas Karam come together to celebrate. Abbas goes to a motel and leaves a suicide note after which he disappears without a trace.
The actors reflect on their past, with all of its glory, pain, and numerous losses. Karam gives Sarhan the old play that he once offered Fotna but Sarhan rejects it. Abbas is found in a public park.
