The hardened Japanese warlord Hidetora Ichimonji resolves that it is time for him to retire and divide his kingdom among his three sons. His two eldest sons, Taro and Jiro, promise loyalty to him, in contrast to the position of the younger son Saburo, which prompts Hidetori to exile him, but with time, he discovers the true face of his two sons behind the masks of loyalty.
