After her mother's death, Eveline suffers from her father's harsh treatment of her and his theft of her wages from her work. She falls in love with the sailor Frank and thinks about leaving town with him, but the moment she escapes, she remembers her mother's commandment to look after the house and suffers psychological paralysis that makes her unable to move even a single step.
