The life of the aspiring stand-up comedian Pete spirals out of control when he finds out that his wife, Jessica, is cheating on him. As he finds himself homeless, Pete performs at an open mic and befriends Artie Lange.

As Pete struggles to adjust to his new situation, Artie lets him open up for himself and T.J. Miller in exchange for driving him to Albany. Pete tries to help Artie not go back to drinking.

T.J. goes with Pete to Jessica's yard sale, where she tells Pete that she no longer loves him, while T.J. encourages Pete to focus on doing more open mics.

Pete runs into trouble while he's handing out flyers for a comedy club. Things don't run smoothly when Pete performs, but he gets support from unexpected people.

When Pete's parents come to New York for a visit, Pete asks Jessica to pretend that they're still happily married in front of his parents. As Pete's mother keeps annoying Jessica during dinner, Jessica tells Pete that he needs to stand up to his mother.

As Sarah Silverman helps Pete get a gig at the Rachael Ray Show, his performance is a success and he gets a steady job at the show. Sarah also gives him a place to stay for the night.

When Leif's wife, Julie, calls Pete to tell him about the affair between Leif and Jessica, Pete acts like he didn't know about it. After making fun of Rachael Ray's mom, Pete loses his gig at her show.

Things come to a boiling point when Pete runs into Jessica at the baptism ceremony of a mutual friend, where both Pete and Leif confess their feelings for Jessica. Pete's life hits rock bottom once again.
