The events revolve around the struggle between the authorities, merchants, charlatans, magicians, and those who hide under the guise of religion. The Apothecary feels that the charlatans are controlling the authority, so he thinks of a strange trick to keep them away from it by spreading a rumor about the spread of a new disease in the city, then claims that he possesses the cure.
