When the widow Louisa Durrell decides to move with her four children from England to the Greek island of Corfu in 1935, she finds out that life on the island has its own challenges.

When Larry Durrell gets sick, Theo and his neighbor Sven rely on primitive medical methods to help him. Spiros tells the family good news that could solve their financial problems.

Louisa regrets her decision to move to Corfu when her son Gerry hangs out with a convict. Margo starts working at the surgery and befriends the Countess.

Louisa goes to extreme measures to save Leslie after he's accused of armed robbery. Margo falls for the gardener and tries to impress him, while Gerry is grieving over the death of one of his animals.

When Louisa's aunt comes for a visit, she wants the family to return back to England. Margo's relationship with the gardener grows stronger, and Gerry continues his animal experiments.

Louisa makes a shocking discovery regarding Sven's true intentions. Margo is determined to invite the Countess to the wedding party. Gerry thinks about letting the animals go.
