When Lenny Belardo becomes the new Pope under the name Pius XIII, his choices and police soon cause discord as he goes against the rules established by his predecessor.

With Lenny's past influencing his views, he makes a controversial first address that raises alarm for Sister Mary and Cardinal Voiello.

As Lenny pushes the Vatican towards a conservative approach, he uncovers an agreement between Cardinal Voiello and Cardinal Spencer that was made after the liberal Cardinals blocked Spencer's election for Pope.

Voiello continues to plot against Lenny and tries to use Esther as a pawn. Lenny considers a decision that could cause an upheaval in the Vatican.

Lenny reveals a secret side as he evades Voiello's plots against him. As Lenny addresses the Cardinals, he announces a conservative shift in the Church's approach, which sends shock waves across the Cardinals.

Despite backlash against his decisions, Lenny resorts to drastic measures to get his way and impose his will on the other Cardinals, leaving one of his childhood friends in a difficult position.

As tensions continue to rise in the Vatican, Voiello gets a surprising new ally against Lenny. Spencer tries to reason with Lenny as everyone fears the effects his decisions will have on the Church.

In the wake of a personal loss, Lenny makes a trip to Africa on the invite of a missonary, only to discover that corruption and tyranny have taken root in the heart of a member of his Church.

As Cardinal Gutierrez tries to find evidence against Kurtwell, their conflict involves the Pope himself as Kurtwell releases letters that were supposedly written by Lenny.

Lenny takes measures to punish Kurtwell and comes to depend on Gutierrez and Sister Mary to right some of the wrongs that have poisoned the Church. An impassioned homily emerges out of Lenny's decision to confront his own demons.
