Simon Jordan, a young American psychiatrist, heads to Canada's Kingston Penitentiary, where he is to deal with Grace Marks, a convicted killer who claims to have no recollection of the crime.

Grace's father forces her to look for a job, and she eventually gets hired as a maid in the Parkinson household, where she befriends the maid Mary Whitney.

Mary Whitney, who is pregnant with the eldest Parkinson's son, dies as a result of an illegal abortion. Grace takes on a new job at the Kinnear household in Richmond Hill, where she meets Nancy Montgomery, a lovely housekeeper who will bring about many changes in Grace's life.

Dr. Jordan delves further into Grace's past to find more about the grumpy handyman, James McDermott. Grace discovers that the housekeeper, Nancy Henderson, is Kinnear's paramour and is pregnant with his baby.

In 1859, Grace gets hypnotized and vividly harks back to the day of the crime, and she explains how McDermott caused the death of Nancy Montgomery.

After the skeptical Dr. Jordan speaks with Grace's lawyer in Toronto, he decides to hypnotize Grace once again. Simon enlists in the Union Army in 1859, while Grace receives some surprising news in 1872.
