After failing in his studies, Khalifa's son returns to his home in the desert, and his father rebukes him as he wished that he'd become the community leader before the French occupation set in. A wedding is held in the neighborhood. As someone disappears, his daughter waits for his return.
Zina goes to Khalifa's son to talk to the French soldiers so that they release her pregnant mother, so he asks for the help of his father, whom they told that she was in the hospital. Khalifa decides to go to the capital and leave his son in charge of the land.
As Khalifa's son tries to assault Zina, she runs away from him, so he follows her, whereupon they go to get her mother, who returns to her home in a terrible state, and her father tries to take her to Sidi Rayyan until she recovers and gives birth.
Jazia dies. Since most of the wells are depleted in the sandy valley, most of the residents want to migrate to the capital, except for Ali, who wants to dig a well and cultivate the land. As Khalifa's son tricks Zina into marrying him by making her sign a piece of paper, she goes ape and quarrels with him.
Mahmoud decides to give Ali the money to dig the well and cultivate the land, which baffles El Wakil. Mahmoud quarrels with the sheikh because he threatened his father, Khalifa, and ordered him to make the residents of Faj Al-Raml serve him instead serving the the mosque.
Zina goes to the house of Mahmoud, Khalifa's son, and asks him to stay away from her and not expose her in the neighborhood, but he tells her that he wants her for himself, and she refuses. As he tries to catch her, she runs away to the mosque, where the sheikh lets her in and tells his wife about her.
As Mahmoud hits Ali on the head, he's taken to the hospital between life and death and his father decides to take him to the capital. Mahmoud wants him to die before he exposes him. The people of Faj Al-Raml decide to go to Sidi Al-Rayyan to offer a sacrifice so that the water returns to the wells.
Ali wakes up from the coma and his father rejoices and tells the people of Faj Al-Raml. Mahmoud orders the sheikh to make Zina live with him, and not talk to anyone or go out at all. As one of Zina's relatives comes to help her, the sheikh catches him.
The sheikh ties the man in front of the mosque and asks the people to hit him with stones because he sneaked at night to see Zina. As Ali recovers, he wishes to return to Faj Al-Raml to find Zina.
Abdul Samad quarrels with the man, who wants to seize his land. Zina is still living in humiliation with the sheikh. Ali's condition improves, while his brother fights French colonialism.
Ali works in a school and hopes that it will become an institute and that all Tunisians will be educated. As his father tells him that Zina is living in the mosque and that she's lost her mind, he grieves for her. El Wakil asks Mahmoud for money to convince the peasants to dig wells for him.
El Wakil and Mahmoud meet with the people of Faj Al-Raml and they tell everyone that it's time for payment, but they refuse as they don't have money, so Mahmoud asks them for the land instead and threatens them with imprisonment.
Ali's mother quarrels with him because he went to the mosque to see Zina. The peasants arrest Mahmoud's men and go to his house to tell him that they won't give up their land, whereupon the sheikh, by order of Mahmoud, and invites them to make an agreement between them.
The French police arrest the peasants in Mahmoud's house, claiming that they were attacking him, and they imprison four of them and the rest give up their lands. The sheikh holds a sermon in Faj Al-Raml to lift the despair. As an epidemic spreads among children, killing them, the doctor tries to treat them.
The sheikh tells the people of Faj Al-Raml that he is in control of the fate of the region, and they must obey him. As some people revolt against him, he orders his men to beat them, and they take one of them from his house and bring him to the mosque, while his son is sick with the epidemic.
The sheikh is arrested by Abdul Samad and detained in the mosque. As Zina is freed, she tells them about his conspiracy with Mahmoud against the peasants, and she returns to her home with her father and meets Ali, who digs the well until water appears. The sheikh escapes from Faj Al-Raml.
