When her unemployed 50-year-old son Roger moves in, the elderly widow Edith's plan to marry her long-time friend Phil and travel abroad gets shattered. Things turn even worse when Roger's wife, Wendy, shows up, as Roger tries to run from her.

Edith's seventieth birthday takes an unexpected turn when Roger and Phil butt heads in an attempt to impress Edith, while Roger finds out that she wants to sell the house, which puts him in conflict with his sister Sandra.

In an attempt to reconcile Wendy and Roger, Mrs. Gale gives them marriage advice. As her efforts are successful, Edith and Phil seize the opportunity to spend the weekend together.

When Edith's old flame Bob Whitley suddenly shows up at her house, she's shocked when he asks her to get back with her. Things get out of control when Edith rejects Bob, and the police arrive.

Things get out of hand when Roger pretends to be Edith's carer so that he can claim the allowance, and uses Mrs. Gale to claim that she's his invalid mother. But when Sandra finds out, she decides to get back at him.

As Phil is concerned that Edith might still have feelings for Bob, his crazy stalker Desiree shows up and things begin to get out of control.

As Phil and Edith prepare a final family gathering before emigrating, it becomes unclear if their plan will actually materialize.
