The story, which is set in the 19th century, centers on the developing romance between Jenny McDowell and her prospective husband, Stephen Foster, an aspiring songwriter. The story opens with Jenny, Stephen, and a black child named Bill performing music as a trio. However, as tragedy befalls Jenny's family, she changes her life's ambitions and commits herself to becoming a doctor.
