When her hometown of Wind Gap is rocked by a brutal murder, Camille Preaker reluctantly accepts her editor's assignment to return home to cover the story, which brings her back to her childhood home and her overbearing mother Adora.

Camille's investigation into the murder of the town's latest victim brings her in conflict with her mother, the local sheriff and the detective in charge of the case.

As relatives of the two murdered girls point the finger at each other, Camille discovers that her mother knew both girls and tried to help them. Richard clashes with Chief Vickery over his assumptions about the murderer. Camille relives a recent tragedy.

Richard and Camille sleep together after a tour of Wind Gap's crime scenes remind Camille of an old trauma. When Camille learns that her half-sister Amma used to be friends with the murdered girls, she is afraid for Amma's life.

A prank from Amma inadvertently reveals Camille's self-harm to her mother. Adora tries to sabotage Camille's relationship with Richard. Amma disappears when a fight breaks out at a local festival.

Richard investigates Camille's past. Camille has trouble reconnecting with her old friends. Amma and Camille bond over their unhealthy habits.

As Richard discovers the truth about Marian's death, Camille comes to realize that Adora poisoned Marian due to an untreated mental disorder that she is now taking out on Amma. Camille and Richard break up after the former crosses a line with a suspect.

Camille diverts Adora's attention away from Amma. Adora nearly kills Camille by giving her doctored "medicine", but Richard and Chief Vickery save her at the last minute. As Adora is arrested for murder and attempted murder, Amma moves in with Camille who discovers a horrifying secret about Amma.
