As a black man raising a family in a predominantly white neighborhood, Dre struggles to instill a sense of cultural identity in his children while giving them the best chance for a bright future.

The Johnsons continue to work hard to balance their cultural identity as African-American with their predominately white neighborhood, experiencing ups and downs as they all deal with the racial implications of being black in America.

The Johnsons deal with everyday struggles as Dre tries to correct his children's behavior and support them when needed, Bow deals with the reality of being biracial, and the children navigate school and growing up black.

With Zoey away for college, Bow and Dre welcome their new baby which brings up new issues for the family to work through as the parents juggle caring for a newborn, parenting their older children, and dealing with their own personal issues.

Bow and Dre continue parenting their children and dealing with their decisions, as Junior decides to take a gap year and the twins start paying attention to social status and finding their way to love.

As the twins enter 8th grade, the family has to juggle helping them with dealing with everyday problems.

With the elections fast approaching, chaos ensues; from Junior discovering his name has been purged from the voter rolls, to Dre's colleague who decides to run for congress.
